Mr. Doane bought land in 1799 from his brother Robert at Richfield, Otsego Co., NY and later moved to Cato, Cayuga Co., N.Y, where he purchased 150 acres of land in 1818 from his uncle, John Merrick. They were members of the First Baptist Church of Cato. He was pathmaster, Dist. 11 in 1820 and 1828; was elected Commissioner of Highways in 1825. In 1832, purchased 80 acres in Lyon Twp. where he was involved in agriculture and commerce.
